Excellence at Work

Students of the Chester Upland School District have goals and dreams and want their schools to help prepare them to become successful, contributing members of society. The District is in the midst of a transformation from one of the most challenged districts in the state to one of excellence. With changes underway at CUSD, the students are doing their part to turn things around.

Points of Pride

In May 2014, the prestigious Gates Millennium Scholarship was awarded to two students from CUSD. Each student is free to use the scholarship at the college of his/her choice.

  • In May 2014, the prestigious Gates Millennium Scholarship was awarded to two students from CUSD. Each student is free to use the scholarship at the college of his/her choice. Funded by a $1 billion grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and administered by the United Negro College Fund, the scholarships are awarded to outstanding minority students who demonstrate academic achievement, community service and leadership.
  • In 2013, a team of seventh graders participated in the state Southeastern Regional Science Olympiad at Cabrini College. The Science Olympiad brings students, teachers, parents, principals and business leader together to work toward a shared goal. The Science Olympiad consists of 23 events within the areas of science, technology and These events provide students with exposure to a variety of career choices and exposure to practicing scientists and mentors.
  • In 2014, sixth-grade students at Stetser Elementary School published a book of original poetry and personal narratives relating to their study of Frederick Douglass and their on-site exploration of “the Hill” neighborhood of Easton, MD, the oldest free black community in the United States. The project reflects their interaction with Professor Dale Green of Morgan State University and their work with Community Leveraged Learning, a non-profit organization committed to developing writing skills for young students.
  • The Chester High School boys’ basketball team earned a District Championship in the 2013-2014 school year, and they were first in the state in 2012-2013. The history of Clipper basketball is legendary with a winning record of eight state championships so far.
